Adult Health Screenings by Age: A Practical Checklist
Which screenings matter in your 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond — a plain-language guide to preventive care for adults in the Dallas–Fort Worth area.

Preventive care works best when it is boring and routine. Here is a broad guide to what is generally recommended by decade. Your own plan may differ, and that is expected.
In your 20s and 30s
- Blood pressure at least every one to two years
- A cholesterol baseline, earlier if you have risk factors or family history
- Diabetes screening if you carry extra weight or have other risk factors
- Cervical cancer screening for women from age 21
- An honest check-in on mood, sleep, alcohol and stress
In your 40s
- Blood pressure and cholesterol reviewed regularly
- Type 2 diabetes screening — commonly advised from 35 for adults carrying extra weight
- Colorectal cancer screening now generally begins at 45
- Breast cancer screening — timing is a discussion, and depends on your risk
- Skin checks if you have significant sun exposure or a family history
In your 50s and 60s
- Continued colorectal screening
- Lung cancer screening if you have a significant smoking history
- Bone density screening for women from 65, earlier with risk factors
- Shingles and pneumococcal vaccination
- Ongoing monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar
65 and beyond
- Annual Medicare Wellness Visit
- A yearly medication review — the single highest-value thing we do at this age
- Falls risk, balance, vision and hearing
- Cognitive screening where appropriate
- Keeping vaccinations current
A word on over-screening
More testing is not automatically better care. Every screening test carries a chance of a false positive, which can lead to further tests, cost and anxiety. Guidelines exist to find the point where benefit outweighs harm for most people — and for some tests, that point genuinely passes with age or declining health.
The right list for you depends on your history, your family and your preferences. Bring this to your next visit and we will build a plan that actually fits.
